Respiratory Therapy

Associate of Occupational Science Degree

Breathing isn’t something we think about until we can’t do it well. That’s when respiratory therapists step in, evaluating and treating patients—from premature infants whose lungs are not fully developed to elderly people whose lungs are diseased. Respiratory therapists provide temporary relief to patients with chronic asthma or emphysema, and give emergency care to patients who are victims of a heart attack, stroke, drowning, or shock.

As the baby boom generation ages, the number of people who suffer from respiratory conditions like pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) will continue to increase. So too will the need for skilled respiratory therapists. In fact, employment of respiratory therapists is expected to increase faster than average (24%) through the year 2016.*

The Respiratory Therapy program combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on learning, preparing you for a clinical practicum in a hospital, sub-acute care center, or diagnostic laboratory.

Completion of the program is acknowledged by receiving an Associate of Occupational Science Degree. With this degree, you will be prepared to function as a Respiratory Therapist in a hospital, home healthcare, or sleep diagnostic center, among other settings. You’ll also be eligible to sit for the Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) and the Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) exams, offered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC), to obtain state licensure and increase your employment options and earning potential.
